Question:

Outlook is running very slowly -- what can I do?

Answer:

Here are problematic 'slowness' symptoms you may be experiencing with Outlook, followed by troubleshooting tips:

Symptoms:

  • Outlook is slow to open or close
  • It takes a long time to move from message to message or folder to folder.

Possibly causes and solutions:

  • The cause: Microsoft Instant Messenger.
The solution:  Disable the link to Instant Messenger on Outlook's Tools, Options, Other tab.
  • The cause:  You are using mapped network drives.
The solution:  Uncheck the box for the dialog to always ask whether to open/save the attachments or disable mapped drives.
  • The cause:  Alternative input support in Office 2003, which allows you to input information through speech or by handwriting.
The solution:  Disable alternative input following instructions in How to turn off the speech recognition and the handwriting recognition features in Office 2003.
